Match Report
Semi Final of the N.I. Cup The team made it through to the semi-finals of the NI Cup for the first time and oh, were they so so close to reaching the final. Well done to the children of the team! The match took place in the Cookstown Arena. St. Eithne’s scored first in the early part of the match. As the St. Eithne's supporters were just arriving and giving the team a rousing cheer, Eoin slipped a pass to Ciaranie, who popped the ball into the bottom left corner of the net. St. Eithne's were strong throughout the first half but Hardy Memorial were no pushovers. They pressed again and again and although St. Eithne's looked to have most of the chances Hardy Memorial equalized with about 10 minutes until half time. At this stage the match became just an end to end battle. In the second half St. Eithne’s came out fighting after a motivating team talk by Coach Feeney. In the 10th minute Emmet was pulled down just aboutr 25 yards from the Hardy goals. Steven stepped up to take the long direct free and he lobbed the ball up into the top right hand corner of the net completely flummoxing the goalkeeper. This match seemed to be won but the referee decided to add 4 minutes for injury time, in his words an injury and 2 substitutions (of which there were none). It was in the very last second of the very last injury time minute that Hardy slammed the ball into the net. The teams then proceeded to play 2 extra 5 minute halves. Our heads were down. It was so hard to play the extra time with that downcast feeling that everything was so unjust. Not so for Hardy Memorial. They had just been saved on the brink and we kept them out throughout but they scored their third goal in the dying minutes of extra time. It was just so hard to take. The St. Eithne’s fans came racing onto the pitch to cheer up their desolated team. WELL DONE TEAM! The season’s not over yet! |
